Bah. I was looking forward to spending the evening kicking around the web when this headache crept up to behind my eyes from a stiff neck. Probably payback from well, mum would say smoking, but that and some comfort food consumption which included a pound of gorgonzola on biscuits and a couple of packs of Oreos chased down with too many cups of a fine French roast the kind lady at the deli grinds for me.

I must have known this was coming or I wouldn't have shopped for the perfect antidote: a kilo of chunky winter salad, which contains pineapple, orange slices, guava, kiwi fruit and strawberries, followed by a bean salad with some wheat-free rye. Delicious. Now, why can't I eat like this all the time?

A message six stories highTalk radio is a staple for me, always in the car and by the bed. Cape Talk is a great channel, with guests like Danny Schechter and Scott Ritter in the last two days.

The stories of violence here are horrific, each one far worse than anything back in the UK. The beauty and brightness of the place heightens my anxiety - something about the idea of having one's brains blown out on a fine sunny day makes it more vivid to me. Pulp Fiction style but without the humour. Then I remember it's the same in most places.

A handicapped girl is shot, later dies, because she isn't getting out of the charity minibus that's being hijacked quickly enough; two agricultural researchers are found alive having been bound and had their throats slit when attacked while on a field trip; a lady is 'jacked in town during rush hour, found days later in a suburban morgue by a PI for the insurance company.

OMG, a flotilla of boats just arrived about 200 yards from my balcony, and they're whale watching!

What was I thinking?

Oh yeah, about reducing my life story to five words or so. I haven't really got there yet, but two that occurred to me were I am alone and I'm reluctant to accept responsibility. I came closest this morning while pondering a pattern wherein I seem to want to invest in people that I know will leave me with nothing or less than I started with:

I'll love you anyway

(For what it's worth, I'm not sure this serves either of us well)

Currently regretting not taking my camera down to the scrap yards when I went to get some wheel covers.

All change... to Mandrake Linux! It's the mutts nuts. FreeS/WAN, Gnome 2, it's got everything! Best of all, it's European. Yes, I know about SuSE, but I have to try and be different. I cut the CD's of the 9.0 Beta1 in a fit of anticipated ADSL deprivation just for testing under VMware. Now I've had to install it as, after dicking up some Debian kernels, I've found my Debian CD's are corrupted beyond repair. (Keep this quiet from the Mandrake peeps, or they'll make me feel guilty for not filing bug reports). They're on Beta4 now. When the release candidate comes out I'll cut some CD's remotely and get them sent out. As a paid up member I'll allow myself two downloads a year. The two problems I can see with this, though, are that tech support being what it is in Hammersmith is going to take about three days to locate and change a blank CD, and anything going through the post here that looks as if it might be of value goes missing. No more mucking with kernels for me, no siree. You can even install a wireless card without compiling a custom kernel, though I haven't done this yet. Sorry about all this geek stuff, more photos soon. Or maybe not - I paid good money for a copy of Macromedia's Fireworks some years back and now I want to use it on this pc but the timed out trial version only gives me the option to Buy Now or Exit and there wasn't anywhere to put the reg'n number in. The support email address they give me doesn't even exist any more. Ferkin shite. Probably I'll have to go and buy another copy of some software I've already paid for, the registration number of which went with the XP installation. We'll see - I've just written to customer support.

Baby steps.

The compact Debian GNU/Linux install went fine. There were some options I hadn't seen before from previous installs under VMware which was to be expected, some I didn't understand. It dialled out first time through the card modem on Mr. Generic that there had been problems with.

First up: Checkinstall, linux-wlan, The Circle, some Python tutorials.

It must say something about me that the most fun I've had in recent weeks was running three copies of the same Debian GNU/Linux install (with Checkinstall installed) concurrently under VMware - hundreds of browser windows and tabs to crawl through it at 28.8k. Can't yet find a way to use Squid or other caching (wwwoffle?) to bring up all those browser windows intact after a reboot. I was attracted to this technique by the following quote:

Redo files can be nested multiple times. This leads to another trick for advanced users, of providing undoable disk capability, at multiple points in time.

I'd like to be doing this sort of thing with the Familiar distribution, but don't know a lot about emulation, or if it's possible.

As it is the slow news season, I'll play a game on Win: Collapse. F3+4 or F3+8 takes you to those levels if the early ones are too slow for you. F3+s toggles sound.

Windows XP did a number on me. What was going to be a long boring story involving googling, corrupted dlls and product protection is now just a poor excuse for having something to write: the disk is ok, but the OS is stuck half way through the setup routine, which fails to copy across the relevant dlls, which prevent it from installing. It takes around 45 mins to get to this stage, which seems to be a consequence of mswsock.dll or phlpapi.dll(?) being fscked. Catch 22. A minimal boot disk doesn't help, and finding a laptop that can take a second drive is beyond me given time constraints. So, does anyone know of utilities I can use that fit into 250/300k or so that I can copy the the really important things one by one onto a diskette? (Four 1mb photos including a classic "is she stoned" self portrait). Um, not sure how I'll know which are the important photos as they're not individually named. NTFS, btw, in case it makes a difference. Blech. I'll probably just move on with the Debian GNU/Linux install. Networking was the first to go, just as I was copying the last 2 gigs over wireless to the other laptop. Ironic no? A short while later even the help system wouldn't work. While crying for help, I need an algorithm for quitting a Frontier install when system memory reaches a certain level. At the moment it quits after a certain number of hits.

On the way to the shops for groceries the other day it came over the wireless that there were whales just yards from the shore at Clifton beach no. 1. I dropped down there for a look and it made my day. Being dark and mainly submerged whales don't make for great pics, but you get one anyway (117k). Someone who'd been there before me told me it had been breaching earlier. Maybe next time.

The most marked change in Cape Town since I was here three months ago is the presence of greatly increased numbers of traffic police. In cars, on bicycles and on foot, in groups and pairs there must be a hundred more of them in Sea Point alone. (Sea Point, where I'm staying, is a predominantly Jewish community on the Atlantic Seaboard side of Cape Town, with longer days and sunset views) The traffic police can stop and question anyone for anything, or so it seems, but mostly they stop people for not wearing seatbelts then check your ID and drivers license and look over the car. My first run-in with them was within two hours of arriving: while tailing delightful cousin Des to my flat she was talking on the phone and a car pulled in between us. She got a R300 fine for using her mobile without hands free. I've been stopped a couple of times since, once for not wearing a seatbelt, once for no particular reason that I could ascertain. Noone seems to mind as it's usually a fair cop, they're young and friendly and less intimidating than fully fledged police people.

Ensure existing Kf.Personas aren't overwritten when choosing new

If a key file contained several groups which weren't contiguously

Block notification of Persona.is-favourite when changing it on
the Individual

This fixes changing the favourite status of an Individual containing
more than
one Persona, since previously the change wouldn't be applied. This
is because
the change would be bubbled down to the first Persona, which
would then
notify of the change to its is-individual property, causing the
Individual's
is-favourite property to be re-calculated incorrectly, since the
favourite
status of the _other_ Personas hadn't yet been changed. Closes:

 • Wrap the subtitle text to fit the video area
 • Changed the default newline type to Windows (CR+LF) to improve compatibility with other platforms (including external video players)

3 - Gnome Subtitles 0.9 is out! 00:02

I'm very happy to announce release 0.9 of Gnome Subtitles. This includes major features, as well as many bug fixes and contributions.

The long-awaited feature for easily synchronizing times based on sync points is now available. This works by selecting a subtitle, adjusting the video to the correct time of that subtitle, and clicking "Add" on the dialog to add that sync point. After the necessary points are added (at least 2 are required), all is ready to start synchronizing. Only the subtitles between the chosen sync points will be used, unless the "synchronize all subtitles" option is active. The dialog is interactive, so it displays status messages to help on the synchronization task.

The application now register for common subtitle files, such as SubRip, MPSub, SubStation Alpha and MicroDVD. This uses MIME types and allows to open files by double-clicking them in nautilus. The user interface is now more polished, after removing the border relief in video-related buttons and decreasing their size. A "Seek To" dialog was added. This allows to seek the video to a specific time/frame instant.

The SubLib project, as stated before, has been incorporated into Gnome Subtitles. This means SubLib isn't needed as a separate package anymore.

Additional features:

 • Allow to close a file without quitting the application (File Close)
 • Replace All now replaces translations too, besides the normal subtitle text
 • Don't change the timing mode, after saving a file, to reflect the timing mode of the subtitle format chosen for saving
 • Added Insert and Delete Subtitles toolbar buttons, removed Find and Replace from the toolbar
 • Improved handling of text formatting tags in SubRip files
 • Show Matroska Video files (MKV) when listing video files
 • Fixed crash on opening a translation file with no subtitles loaded
 • Major refactoring of the video playback engine, with GStreamer Playbin (code from the FuseMC project) being incorporated into the project source tree and GStreamer events being received asynchronously now, which means the user interface adapts to the video in an asynchronous/non-blocking way
 • Fixed some bugs in the video playback engine, such as loading a file when the previously loaded file wasn't played, and video position not being correctly updated after loading the video and before starting playback

Changes in the project dependencies:

 • Requires gtk, gtk-sharp, glade-sharp and gconf-sharp 2.12 or higher
 • No longer requires gnome-sharp nor sublib

4 - SubLib merged into Gnome Subtitles 17:07

SubLib, the subtitle library used by Gnome Subtitles, has been merged into the Gnome Subtitles source code repository.

The original purpose of the SubLib subtitle library was to provide multimedia applications with a common and simple way to work with different file formats, performing file editing, searching, translation and synchronization. Since its creation, although some projects have used SubLib in order to take some concepts and ideas, as was the case with a couple of commercial applications, SubLib itself wasn't used by those projects. In fact, SubLib is currently only used by the Gnome Subtitles project.

That said, it was decided to merge its source code into Gnome Subtitles. This move not only eases the development of Gnome Subtitles, but also facilitates the tasks of packaging and releasing the application.

8 - Gnome Subtitles in Ubuntu 19:34

Gnome Subtitles is now in the official Ubuntu repositories (Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron release).

There is, however, a missing dependency in the package which may make the application crash when creating new files. If so, please install the "libmono-i18n2.0-cil" package using Synaptic. This will be fixed in future releases.

9 - Slackware and Mandriva 00:02

Slackware packages are available in the Gnome Slacky repository.

Mandriva packages are available in the official contrib repository.

10 - Recently heard 23:23

Gnome Subtitles has received the Editor Award from Uptodown.com.

In other news, quoting a recent article from Linux.com:

Gnome Subtitles is probably the best subtitle editing application in Linux.

Under preparation is release 0.8 of Gnome Subtitles, which is to be expected soon. Stay tuned.

1 - In need of an internal IM server? Try Wildfire 00:09
At work, we use an IM server from Microsoft that uses the Windows Messenger app as a client, and only works for internal communications. Since last week and for reasons unknown, the server is not responding (the person in charge didn't reply to my emails). As a group of developers separated by geography, IM tools are a must-have. That got me thinkning, isn't there an easy alternative that we can use? what about a XMPP (Jabber) server installed on a linux development environment, and some jabber-compatible client?

Well, after a quick search I found a very good XMPP Server, which by chance is made in Java (OK, not by chance. I chose it precisely because of this reason). Wildfire IM Server (Formerly Jive Messenger) is an ideal solution for us, since its small, free, and most of all, has support for LDAP-based accounts, which means we can use it with our LDAP-enabled development server (I'll post later how I set up the server to use LDAP for things like unix shell, svn access, etc.).

In less than 15 minutes I got Wildfire set up to use MySQL as the Database for storing data, and LDAP for authentication. Instantly every developer that has access to the development environment is now able to connect to the IM server, and it even shows the LDAP groups for the different projects.

I just saw how Wildfire was profiled to improve performance, and I'm sure it will get faster (not to mention better) as they move forward. Now I only need to pitch it to upper management in hopes of replacing the old IM server.

2 - If it's good enough for Linus... 14:30
On the Gnome Usability mailing list, Linus Torvalds replied to a mail from Till Kamppeter asking about PPD options removed from the printing dialog, by actively saying that he (Linus) encourages everyone to switch or use KDE. He then goes to criticize Gnome developers as 'interface Nazis', which care more about dumbing down the user interface than they care about implementing new features.

I personally have been using KDE since 1.x, and I've always preferred it to Gnome, but time to time I come in contact with Gnome, mainly because the distribution I'm testing comes with Gnome by default (like Ubuntu, which I tested last month). And I've seen how features that were in one release suddenly disappear in the following one. And I don't mean the are hidden in an 'advanced' mode. They simply just aren't there anymore. It is really a shame that many popular projects are using Gnome (or GTK+, rather) as their windows toolkit, like Firefox (which by the way, just released 1.5) or even Eclipse.

It's good to hear other people say they prefer KDE, but when it comes from the guy who invented the Linux kernel, my respect for KDE just went up a couple of notches (My respect for Gnome is already too low to lose points). I saw this story at OSNews (sent to me by a friend).
3 - Switched Linux Distribution... Again 16:37
After playing with Ubuntu for a while, I decided it was time to test another Linux distribution. This time, I went with OpenSuSE 10.0. As always, installation wasn't a problem. In less than 25 minutes I had my system up and running. I liked the fact that opensuse, after installing, takes you directly to the login screen. No reboot required. It's been a while since I installed Windows XP on a machine, but I remember at least a couple of reboots to get my system installed.

Among one of the nicest features of opensuse is the fact that installing FreeNX is a breeze. And it works really good. I just wish I could 'detach' from a session, so I can return to the same session later.

The OSS version of SuSE does not include Java support on the installation CDs, but it's just a matter of adding a repository to the YaST installer to get Java. I installed Java 1.5 and Eclipse 3.1 with no problems.

Administration is somewhat different from other distributions. For example, they provide 'rcscripts', which are just links to the real scripts on /etc/init.d/. At first I found this a little odd, but now I got accustomed to them.

The only thing that I would change is the addition of sudo support, just like Ubuntu. In Ubuntu, you don't have to use a root account (in fact, you usually don't assign a password to root) but instead rely on sudo to do everything. The first account you set up has root sudo privileges, and you only need the password for the user to execute something as root. I hope more distributions chose this route.

I have yet to test my full set of hardware, but I'm sure I'll have little troubles.

1 - Safari 3 06:55
I think I've tried just about every web browser available for the Mac. The included Safari 2 didn't feel quite right, Firefox was too slow and a memory hog, Flock, Shiira and some others just didn't really fit what I was looking for. Camino was nice and light, and better integrated with the Mac than Firefox, but I was missing a good search box and it felt a little too limited in features. Now I'm using the Safari 3 beta and couldn't be happier. There are lots of little things that just feel "right" and it fits with the Mac OS nicely. After downloading an application you are warned that it contains an app, and if you approve the DMG file is mounted so you can run or install the app. But, the one thing that seems simple, but I've felt missing in browsers for a while is the tab management. On Linux I used Epiphany which has supported rearranging tabs for a while, and Firefox now supports it, but Safari gets one more thing right: dragging tabs between windows. So far I haven't seen another browser do this, but in Safari you can drag a tab up or down to detach it from the current window and either drag it to a different window, or out into a new window. It's not a feature I use constantly, but I do really like being able to keep my tabs organized in a logical manner instead of having a random assortment of tabs all open in the same window. Thanks Apple for getting this right.

4 - Mac Migration (part 1) 06:42
A week ago I started my new job at YouTube_. Most people here use Macs so I got a nice shiny new MacBook Pro to work on. I've been using Linux (Debian_ and Ubuntu_) almost exclusively for about 4 years now and Windows before that, so I've been quickly getting up to speed on using my new Mac. .. _YouTube: http://youtube.com .. _Debian: http://debian.org .. _Ubuntu: http://ubuntu.com One of my first major annoyances was that some form controls weren't keyboard navigable. Filling out web forms was frustrating since hitting Tab would skip past drop-down fields, and when dialogs popped up and I didn't want to respond with the default button I had to switch over to the mouse instead of just tabbing to the right one. Fortunately I found these `instructions on changing this behavior`_. Now I can use the keyboard to quickly navigate these inputs. .. _instructions on changing this behavior: http://www.tonyspencer.com/2006/05/02/tab-skips-select-form-fields-in-mac-browsers/ More on my Mac switch to come.

10 - The Daily Show: Not "Fake News" 16:02
Indiana University conducted a study of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" comparing the amount of actual content in their coverage of the 2004 elections in comparison to "real" news shows. Regular watchers of The Daily Show will not be surprised to find that there was no significant difference in the amount of political content offered by the humor show. The Daily Show has quite often ridiculed the rediculous topics covered by "real" new programs such as those on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. These shows are no less padded with "entertainment" than The Daily Show, though they lack the witty satire offered by Jon Stewart and his team of writers. So, don't feel guilty about relying on The Daily Show to stay informed. You not only get a good source of news, but some good laughs as well. `Read the press release from Indiana University `_

18 - Ubuntu the fridge: First Kernel Triage Summit 02:22
On Saturday September 11th the Kernel Team will take the first in what I hope to be a series of steps toward educating ourselves and our community in the triage of the thousands of bugs that pass our way daily.
My goal for this event is to begin the process of training those interested in helping with kernel bugs in the way we process our bug tickets. This first event is meant to help us both educate and document. The information on the first ever Triage Summit is located on the wiki here.

As with everything we do, your feedback is appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to send us e-mail to the team list at kernel-team@lists.ubuntu.com or even on the wiki page itself. Your feedback will go a long way toward our plans for future events like this.

The schedule for Saturday is as follows:

1) at 1400 UTC we will hold a General session centered around providing information as to where to locate us, who our upstreams are and where to find them as well as the new subsystem breakdown of bugs to help us gather related issues more easily and get them in front of the right people.

2) at 1500 UTC there will be a session on Graphics and all of its related bits and bytes. There will be a focus on basic, effective triage for this subset as well as locations to find troubleshooting information and further reading on Graphics issues

3) at 1600 UTC there will be a session on audio bugs and the related subsystem parts involved there. This session will also have a basic troubleshooting and location portion so as to guide those interested in triaging audio bugs with further information.

4) at 1700 UTC we will have something of a lightning round in which we briefly discuss the USB/Firewire and Bluetooth stacks as well as helpful debugging and triage steps for this subset of bugs

As stated before, your feedback on these sessions as well as the documentation that will be provided will be most helpful to us. You are also welcome to approach us for other avenues of support. We are always looking for more help on a variety of kernel related areas such as documentation, bugs and spelling/grammar applications :-) so please don’t hesitate to ask how you can help.

[Discuss the First Kernel Triage Summit on the Forum]

20 - Planet Mozilla: Joshua Cranmer: Usage share of newsreaders 01:24
I have noted before, by a nonscientific and utterly biased survey, that Thunderbird appeared to account for a significant share of the newsreader market (testing bug 16913 was what caused me to discover this fact). But actually finding any attempts to measure usage share of newsreaders via Google has actually been rather frustrating. You can easily find market shares of web browsers, desktop operating systems, server operating systems (though the numbers vary wildly?), and mobile platforms. But not things like email client shares or newsreader shares.

Okay, I am not about to find market shares of email clients. I have no access to anywhere near enough a representative sample that could work. But collecting newsreader market shares should not be that hard. After all, pretty much anyone can pick up a large, representative sample of news postings... connect to a NNTP server of your choice. So, seeing as how it's a three-day weekend, I thought I might as well collect the data myself. The other reason for my collecting this data was to demonstrate that a significant number of Thunderbird users are NNTP, so removing NNTP support would adversely affect the userbase.

Methodology

First off, I have to define what I mean by "usage share." Unlike other mediums, a relatively small numbers of users account for a relatively large share of NNTP postings. I've decided to measure it by the number of posts generated by each NNTP client, since it's easier to calculate, and I think it is more informative than the measuring by individual users.

I also have to pick the subset to log. For this set of data, I collected every single news article in the Big-8 newsgroups on my school's NNTP server (news.gatech.edu), which has a retention time of a month (30 days is the exact number, I think). I did not even attempt to filter out spam messages, and I did not account for cross-posting (my script managed to crash due to races a few times, so the totalized data which accounted for cross-posting was unreported).

Essentially, this is what I did. I ran a python which collected every group in the big 8 (determined by LIST ACTIVE wildmats) on the server. Then, it entered every group, performed an XOVER to find all messages, and then XHDR'd User-Agent, X-Mailer, and X-Newsreader to figure out what the user agent was. This script output, for every group, a total for each full string that represented the UA into a ~2MB csv file.

I collected all of the csv data into OpenOffice.org Calc and then ran a macro which attempted to collect the program number and the version from the UA strings. Unsurprisingly, I had to do some hacks to get it to recognize SeaMonkey and Thunderbird correctly (Mnenhy was not helping). I output tables that broke readers down by versions and by total program counts.

Results

It turns out that there is an incredibly long tail of newsreaders. There are about 250 different UA strings I found. Excluding one particularly prevalent bot and those postings for which I could not find a UA string, I found around 430,000 messages (there may be some other things dropped by copy-paste errors). Of these, the top 5 newsreaders account for just 79% of the total count. By contrast, the top 5 web browsers account for very nearly 100% of the total. Some interesting newsreaders I found in the long tail:

 • Mozilla 4.8 [en] (Windows NT 5.0; U)
 • Mozilla 3.04 (WinNT; U)
 • trn 4.0-test70 (17 January 1999)
 • Lynx/2.8.5rel.1 libwww-FM/2.14 SSL-MM/1.4.1 GNUTLS/0.8.12
 • MyBB

Finally, here is the table of the top newsreaders:

NewsreaderTotalPercent
Google Groups18953643.94%
Thunderbird5225812.11%
Forte Agent4710010.92%
Microsoft Outlook Express410429.51%
Microsoft Windows Live Mail111962.60%
MT-NewsWatcher108722.52%
Other7935918.40%

That Google Groups has the highest market share is not surprising, but I was surprised by the strong showing of Forte Agent and the poor showing of traditional newsreaders (e.g., tin, rn-based newsreaders). I guess this goes to show you that Windows has a surprisingly large market share in the Big 8 newsgroups. For SeaMonkey enthusiasts, your newsreader has a mere 4,187 postings (with another ~5K provided by other Mozilla distributions, some of whom cannot be determined... Mnenhy made processing UA strings difficult).

In terms of individual versions, one of Outlook Express's versions clocks in #1 at 31,617 total posts, with Thunderbird 3.1.2 trailing at a "mere" 23,661. Thunderbird has around 14,000 on the 2.x branch, 11,000 on the 3.0.x branch, and 25,000 on the 3.1.x branch. There is apparently some spoofing going on for SeaMonkey users as well (I found a dozen or so Firefox entries, which I presumed is a SeaMonkey-spoofed UA string).

Another datum incidentally collected was the number of postings in each hierarchy. Here they are:

HierarchyCountLargest Newsgroup
comp.*64,360comp.soft-sys.matlab (8,399)
humanities.*2,460humanities.lit.authors.shakespeare (1,455)
misc.*28,518misc.test (8,796)
news.*31,635news.list.filters (26,238)
rec.*217,548rec.games.pinball (14,707)
sci.*47,948sci.electronics.design (6,076)
soc.*87,192soc.retirement (6,053)
talk.*12,513talk.origins (6,498)

Remind me again why we have the humanities hierarchy? Almost 60% of its messages come from a single newsgroup, and it has just 8 newsgroups.

Future Work

What could be done in the future is to expand this research into binary newsgroups. However, merely counting posts becomes a more inappropriate metric because binary newsgroups use a lot of multipart messages, so just because someone uploads a ginormous binary does not mean it should be counted 50 times. I also don't have access to any binary newsservers.

Another opportunity for fixing is to discount spam. As a brief test, I looked into only those newsgroups which had the name `moderated'--this resulted in a paltry sample of 3,272 messages. The statistics also appear to not change much, but the newsgroups are likely not a representative sample of the Big 8 anyways.

Finally, this needs to be broadened and run repeatedly so it can collect snapshots of the data across time. This metric suffers poorly at capturing historical data, but it could be an excellent way to get data every few months from the future, so long as someone collects all of the data in the future.

26 - LXer - Linux News: Using ATA Over Ethernet (AoE) On Ubuntu 10.04 (Initiator And Target) 23:19
This guide explains how you can set up an AoE target and an AoE initiator (client), both running Ubuntu 10.04. AoE stands for "ATA over Ethernet" and is a storage area network (SAN) protocol which allows AoE initiators to use storage devices on the (remote) AoE target using normal ethernet cabling. "Remote" in this case means "inside the same LAN" because AoE is not routable outside a LAN (this is a major difference compared to iSCSI). To the AoE initiator, the remote storage looks like a normal, locally-attached hard drive.

30 - BerliOS SourceWell: libv4l 0.8.1 21:31

libv4l is a collection of libraries that adds a thin abstraction layer on top of video4linux2 (V4L2) devices. The purpose of this layer is to make it easy for application writers to support a wide variety of devices without having to write separate code for different devices in the same class. It consists of 3 different libraries. libv4lconvert offers functions to convert from any (known) pixel format to V4l2_PIX_FMT_BGR24 or V4l2_PIX_FMT_YUV420. libv4l1 offers the (deprecated) v4l1 API on top of v4l2 devices, independent of the drivers for those devices supporting v4l1 compatibility (which many v4l2 drivers do not). libv4l2 offers the v4l2 API on top of v4l2 devices, while adding support for the application transparent libv4lconvert conversion where necessary.

34 - LXer - Linux News: Open source tools for audio editing (jamin,Ardour and rosengarden) 20:28
Often when I suggest Linux as an alternative I hear, yes i like it unfortunate that there is nothing as software for processing digital audio, so I must stay with Windows. A sufficiently powerful computer with good quality sound cards, can become very suitable for a hobbyist recording studio, as well as an excellent solution for a teaching laboratory, although there are already those who use the programs that we are to speak at semiprofessional. With a little patience and expertise in Linux, you can indeed create a workstation for processing digital audio at no charge for licenses. The Open Source products for this type of work most suitable and popular right now are probably Ardour, Jamin and Rosengarden.

Changes: Many more laptop models were added to the upside down devices table. Short frames are now detected, and up to three retries are initiated to get a non short frame. UVC cameras with more than 16 frame sizes are now properly supported. Support for the Xirlink C-It YYVYUY format and for the Konica YUV420 format were added. In the tools, various v4l-keytable improvements and various qv4l2 fixes were made, and v4l2-ctl gained support for s/g_dv_timings.

40 - Enterprise Open Source Magazine: Belgacom’s Hosting Unit Falls to AccelOps 18:30
AccelOps, the three-year-old start-up that monitors data centers, networks and clouds with software delivered either SaaS or as a virtual appliance, has enticed Belgacom ICT, the old Belgian PTT’s pan-European IT arm, into its fold. Belgacom means to use the stuff for its 200 hosted commercial IT services customers. AccelOps, which baby-sits service, performance, availability, security and change management, reportedly won a run-off against competitors like Nimsoft and Zenoss. Belgacom reportedly liked the idea that the widgetry was agent-free, multi-tenant as well as multi-site and of course scaled.

42 - LXer - Linux News: Are You Intimidated By Breakfast Cereal? 17:49
An article by Graham Morrison for Tech Radar UK this past week struck a bit of a raw nerve for me. It was one of a type we see periodically in the tech press and the title pretty much tells the story: ?"The trouble with Linux: there's too much choice." To Mr. Morrison and all the others who have written articles like this one I say: Hogwash! I pose the following questions to Mr. Morrison and to all the others who share his views. Are you ?intimidated by the breakfast cereal isle in his supermarket? After all, there are so many choices. Isn't it confusing? Should we all just eat corn flakes?

55 - Planet Mozilla: Robert Kaiser: Bridging Web and Local App(lication)s 16:37
A major belief among a large part of the Mozilla community appears to be that 5-10 years in the future, the desktop or local applications will be extinct, and all we'll be working with will be "web apps".

Now, as with many other things, I don't think this extreme will be the common case (or else we should stop caring about Windows, Mac OS or any other "fat" operating system and all jump fully on ChromeOS) - but I'm sure that "web apps" will play a very much larger role, and I agree that almost everyone will at least use some of those.

In such a future, where the common case will be to use both web and local applications to some extent, probably also with a mixture of cloud and pocket data, it will matter a lot to have solid and well-thought-out ways of bridging their differences and working well with both - esp. for professional and advanced users, who spend a lot of time "in front of the screen" (whatever that will look like).

Also to keep in mind is that pure web applications in the currently done ways pose a problem for some people - I had an interesting conversation recently with a guy working in development aid for some African regions where he said there are entire communities of people that share a 256 KBit/sec Internet connection and things like Facebook or GMail cause nightmares for him.
That surely doesn't mean they should not exist, but those cases need thought, just like cases where you (intentionally or unintentionally) have no or a very bad network connection but might want to do work with your (mobile) computer (device). Not every place where people go in or around this world will have high-volume Internet access available for everyone all the time. We don't even have light all the time on this world, even though life on this planet heavily depends on it, and we have a transmitter right in our neighborhood (well, in terms of what we need there, 8 light-minutes are right next door).

Still, web applications allow the incredible stunt to have the same software on a free and open platform that runs on all kinds of devices with mostly quite permissive licensing. And they allow getting productive immediately, without long install procedures or continuous updating - as well as unprecedented collaboration and other features only the web can make possible.
On the other hand, they're currently one of the worst examples in cross-application consistency, easy adaptation to the personal look and feel preferences and integration with the people's work environments, leaving any current or past desktop environment looking like a champ in comparison.

To improve those situations, we of course need to have possibilities for web applications to cache code and data locally so they don't need to load everything a new all the time, they need ways to adopt to a common look and feel defined by those accessing them, ways to integrate with the work environments - and a richer toolkit of easy-to-use controls to match desktop applications. All those are being worked on by the teams of Mozilla and other browser vendors in committees working on improving HTML, CSS, ECMAScript and other web technologies as well as in implementations in our web runtimes ("rendering engines" is not the correct term any more, I guess).

What we also need, though, are smooth transitions between desktop and web applications - in both ways - and between local and cloud/remote data, both in terms of the user-facing side and in terms of writing applications. We need local and web applications that can work with local and cloud/remote data, we need technologies to write local application with (basically) the same set of technologies as we're writing web applications, and we need to be able to convert one to the other rather seamlessly.

The Mozilla platform already works very much with the a lot of the same set of technologies as the web, so we are in a good position in this area already, but we need to become even better by making the technologies even more similar (and there's a lot that future HTML can learn from XUL, too, even if XUL is being treated a lot like the ugly stepchild nowadays). A lot of awesome things can be done today, but I'm convinced that's nothing compared to what we'll be able to do tomorrow if we follow those paths we're already on to the most part.

And then, I'm quite convinced that there's a tremendous potential on an application that bridges web browsing, running web applications, and running local application code built around web/Internet communications. All those things should seamlessly integrate, work together, be able to exchange data where the user allows it, and give us the power of being productive, social, communicative, efficient, informed, and interconnected all at once. Right now, there's nothing as productive and efficient than fast, organized local application interfaces, and there's nothing as social and interconnected as some web applications. An integrated Internet application could build a bridge between them, bring that together and beat all the single offers out there, and there's none better situated in that particular race than SeaMonkey. We just need to grab the chance and bring it there.

Who is with me in that?

75 - Mozilla Labs Blog: 2756 bugs found. 09:56

In the realm of mailnews, there are a few parts of the code that don’t really get all the attention they deserve. One of them is the compose window.

> jcranmer: libmime and compose are pretty much the two areas that I refuse to do research in
> bwinton: jcranmer: That’s a pretty good policy

The compose window actually involves different pieces of software: one of them is responsible for assembling the message, and passing it to the sending logic. The other one is the actual composition UI, which includes a whole bunch of dialogs (e.g. inserting an image, inserting a link), as well as the central component, called the editor (the big blank area where you type your message). Different factors can explain the lack of activity in that part of the Thunderbird code:

 • editor is notoriously hard to grasp – this is a vast, ancient piece of software, that didn’t quite move on as the rest of the gecko core kept improving (although this has been changing recently, thanks to Ehsan’s work),
 • the assembling and sending logic is all-C++, which makes it hard for extension authors to interact with us, and for would-be contributors to help us,
 • the composition UI involves a lot of (very old) files, most of which we cannot maintain, because
 • Mozilla Messaging is extremely low on resources.

We’re currently exploring ways to relieve the pressure, and move on to a saner design for us. I’ve been working on an experiment that aims at tackling these pain points. It basically consists in replacing the standard XUL compose window with a tab written in XHTML that integrates CKEditor, and doing all the composition process in JS, upto the actual send that takes places in C++.

The potential benefits are as follows.

 • We’d be able to move to a more maintainable architecture. Having the compose code written in JS would certainly enable us to do much more, and be much more extensible.
 • We’d pave the way for having a pluggable editor. Right now, the code is assuming that the only part that sends messages is the compose window. Other people might want to send messages too (Thunderbird Air is one of them).
 • We’d defer the maintainance burden of the composition UI – the insert image dialog, for instance – to a third-party. This means more bugfixing, more active development, from a project that is Thunderbird-friendly to boot. We’re not doing any active development on these anyway…
 • We’ll certainly introduce tons of bugs. However, fixing bugs in CKEditor certainly sounds more doable than fixing bugs in the C++ editor components.
 • We’d be able to attract more contributors: unless you’re mentally insane, you don’t want to hack XUL and C++ components — however, fixing a whole bunch of Javascript sounds more reasonable.
 • We’d finally introduce the much-wanted “compose in a tab” feature.

This experiment has barely reached the point where it starts being actually usable. However, I figured out I might as well share it with the community so that we can gather initial feedback.

Some disclaimers apply.

 1. That extension actually requires Contacts for the autocomplete (a nice side-effect is that you can autocomplete more than two addresses for the same contact, ha!).
 2. This extension is an experiment. There’s a huge list of things it doesn’t do. Right now, it barely allows you to reply, forward, and edit/save drafts. It doesn’t take your preferences into account, it only sends html, not mixed mime emails. It has bugs. Lots of them.
 3. To make sure this works properly, you need to ensure in Tools > Accounts settings that for each of your accounts, in the “Composition and addressing” section, “Compose messages using HTML” is actually checked. Otherwise, you will send HTML markup as plain/text, which is usually a bad idea.
 4. This release targets Thunderbird 3.1. Because patches that enhance interaction between this new editor and the Thunderbird core will have to wait for 3.2, you will see a lot of errors in the Error Console.
 5. Support will be scarce. I am not a Mozilla Messaging employee, and I’m doing this on my spare time. So please be patient, check out the list of missing features on the GitHub Wiki, and don’t report a ton of bugs: I’m probably aware of them already :-) .

77 - LXer - Linux News: Considerations For FLOSS Hackers About Oracle vs. Google 09:25
Many have already opined about the Oracle v. Google lawsuit filed last week. As you might expect, I'm not that worried about what company sues what company for some heap of cash; those sort of for-profit wranglings just aren't what concerns me. Rather, I'm focused on what this event means for the future of software freedom. And, I think even at this early stage of the lawsuit, there are already a few lessons for the Free Software community to learn.

82 - Freshmeat: Vendetta Online 1.8.143 08:16
Vendetta Online is a multi-platform 3D space-combat MMO for Windows, Mac, Linux/32 and Linux/64. The game permits players to interact in a vast online galaxy; fighting, trading, and mining their way to success. A "twitch" type real-time combat model makes true player skill the deciding factor instead of character advancement. Massive capital-ship battles shake the foundations of the major nations at war, while others struggle to push back the encroachment of the AI "Hives". A no-strings free trial is available.

Changes: Mission postings are sanity checked, hopefully preventing any cases of non-functional Hive Skirmish missions. A shader error was fixed in the Android version. A bug with being unable to sell Synthetic Silksteel at stations has been fixed. The Windows version is better optimized due to the use of a newer C++ compiler.

86 - Freshmeat: uxdstools 0.6 07:52
uxdstools is a set of Unix directory service tools. It is a suite of command tools to administer POSIX user and group accounts in an LDAP directory. It is similar in spirit to the useradd/mod/del tools found on Linux and Solaris, the pw tools on BSD, the mk|ch|rmuser/group tools on AIX, etc. However, instead of manipulating local accounts, uxdstools manages POSIX-type accounts that can be found in LDAP directory services installations, namely those with posixAccount and posixGroup attributes.

Changes: The directory structure of the package was reorganized to a more sane hierarchy (with src and man as separate directories) for better future planning. Makefile.am and configure.in were updated to reflect this. Minor variable scope changes were made in sudoldap.c. authz_sasl_interact was renamed to uxds_sasl_interact, due to the need to have a uniform naming convention.

98 - Freshmeat: Clonezilla live-testing 1.2.6-18 06:03
Clonezilla is a partition or disk cloning tool similar to Symantec Ghost. It saves and restores only blocks in use on the hard drive if the file system is supported. For unsupported file systems, dd is used instead. It has been used to clone a 5 GB system to 40 clients in about 10 minutes.

Changes: The underlying GNU/Linux operating system was upgraded. This release is based on the Debian Sid repository (as of 2010/Sep/04). Partclone was updated to 0.2.15. Live-boot was updated to 2.0.3-1.drbl1, and live-config was updated to 2.0.4-1.drbl1. New file system support, btrfs, was added. Note that btrfs is still beta, so this support is in testing. Russian language support was updated.

1 - Martin Owens: Whoa! Where?s it going? 04:55

After good healthy interest in yesterday’s video I decided to post the code in a repository (GPLv3 and CC-BY-SA) and as a second act to deliver Mark Shuttleworth’s feature request which I show off in the new video:

View Video on Blip

This is particularly cool since it means desktops will converge and look the same at certain dates as well as diverge and look different at all other times. What are your thoughts?

2 - Scott Kitterman: Look before you leap – Kubuntu Maverick 04:31

Here at my house we have three desktops, two different kinds of netbooks, and a laptop running Kubuntu. They all have two things in common:

1. They all have Intel graphics of one variety or another.

2. None of the work very well (or at all) with Kwin compositing in Maverick.

These appear to be mostly properly blacklisted from compositing to start with, but the thing is, they all work with compositing just fine on Lucid (the upstream Kwin solution to compositing issues with KDE 4.5 is to make sure the black lists disable compositing where it won’t work well and that generally works). The problem is (from my perspective) that I have a beautiful, functional composited “desktop” in Lucid with KDE 4.4 and to move to KDE 4.5 in Maverick and lose that would not be an “upgrade”.

None of my hardware is cutting edge for Intel. The newest is i965. I have one of those, four i945 variants, and one i865. It may be that newer chips are fine, I have no way of testing.

Personally, I find this extremely demotivating. After investing a truly ridiculous amount of time and effort into Kubuntu development, I discover at the end that I literally have no systems I can reasonably run it on (my servers are staying LTS anyway).

I’m posting this as a warning to people considering upgrading. Don’t just upgrade, burn a live CD and try it out first. Make sure you’re happy with the graphics performance.

P. S. The current KDE in Maverick, 4.5.1, is the one we will release with. If you want to know why 4.5.1 instead of the usual 4.X.2 we’ve released with for the last four release cycles? It’s because 101010 binary = 42 decimal. Enjoy the extra bugs.
